Timeless
Reviews
The number one best cartoon on Earth:
Bugs Bunny and his cast of loonies:
Hands
down Bugs is as popular today as he was 60 years ago. He is timeless and
unchangeable. His loonies are the most memorable group of characters on
Earth. I like Disney movies and Mickey Mouse, but they can't compare to
Bugs. There is something for everyone to relate to. People know a blustery
windbag like Foghorn Leghorn (politicians in particular), or a greedy person
like Daffy and everyone wants to be as cool and smooth as Bugs Bunny. More
than that, they were funny. They're still funny. Not just the newer releases
but cartoons from the 50's and 60's are just as funny today. I have nothing
but great memories of these cartoons.
Two:
Tom & Jerry: Yes it was violent. Did the violence have a point?
Hmmmm. But it was memorable and not in a negative way. The old Tom & Jerry
cartoons were a work of art. They were funny, and to this day watching
Tom figure out ways to get Jerry are still
hilarious.
Seeing Tom in a ‘Zoot suit' was priceless. It was something obviously popular
when the cartoon was made but it still gave me a new name for a 3 piece
suit. Compare them with the Simpsons now. The Simpsons make fun of Tom
and Jerry by showing Itchy and Scratchy doing the most violent things imaginable.
Things I'm sure serial killers are getting ideas from. The Simpson's while
not being the worst cartoon on earth is not one of my favorites. No one
under 15 should look at it.
Despite how they treated each other, Tom and Jerry were friends. They
lived for the chase and out smarting each other. I rooted for Tom. Jerry
usually got the best of him, even when Tom wouldn't chase him. Classic
and funny.
Three:
Pinky and the Brain: Trying to take
over
the world. While not as old as Bugs or Tom and Jerry, Pinky & the Brain
is timeless. While it is geared more for adults with it's political innuendo
(just like Bullwinkle used to) it is still amazingly funny even to a five
year old. Say what you will about Spielberg, but he did bring cartoons
up to a certain standard of quality after years of decline.
Four:
The Flintstones: The age old family. It proves the theory
that
no matter what time you live in, family life is funny. Married life is
still the same, kids, dog, and a job you can't stand. In the sixties they
were the longest running prime time tv show, lasting six years. For history
and pics of Flintstones head on over to TNT. Although the Jetsons are redone
from the Flintstones, I don't find them as funny as Fred. I also don't
like how Fred's hawking cereal like it was the second coming, but hey Bugs
is selling phone service.
Five
Gargoyles: There is a lot to like about this show. Gargoyles, has stood the test of time because it deals with so many real life issues. It had an edge to it that even Batman Beyond can't match. It is certainly unique, ground breaking and I guarantee it will be remembered 30 years from now. It's not so much funny as tragic. You can go to the archive to see the review of gargoyles.
And finally Six the Smurfs: The love is so sweet you can overdose on the sugar. I know it may seem kiddy or formula plot driven, and they were pounding home wholesome messages, but at the time it was THE most popluar cartoon of the 80's until He-Man loomed larger.
Peyo created something different. Many accuse the Smurfs of being communists. Even if they are it's still a cartoon that's funny, heartwarming and better than life. I can't find anything to fault the Smurfs with; they were funny, cute and never boring.
Of course there are many more cartoons out there that will last for the decades, but I picked these not just because they lasted decades but because of their quality stories that you can watch 100 times and still enjoy. Because after another 60 years when the world has changed beyond reason these cartoons will still be funny.
